Train communication between Dhaka and the country’s northwest region came to a halt on Wednesday morning after students of Rabindra University blocked a railway track in Ullapara of Sirajganj, demanding the establishment of a permanent campus.
The protest began at around 9am beside Ullapara railway station, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded.
Students said that despite nine years having passed since the university’s inception, it still operates from rented buildings with minimal facilities.
They complained of the absence of residential halls, playgrounds, and other essential infrastructure.
According to the protesters, the Ministry of Education has approved a Tk 519 crore project for campus construction, but the Development Project Proposal (DPP) is yet to be approved by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC).
They vowed to continue their movement until the DPP is approved and construction begins.
