On Sunday at around 10:30 am, a protest march began from Islampur with demonstrators chanting slogans. They attempted to break the main gate of the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court (CMM) with bricks and sticks.
Around 11 am, more than a thousand people, including local businessmen and shop workers from Islampur, marched from Sadarghat’s Islampur area. The procession passed the main gate of Jagannath University and moved towards Tati Bazar.
As the march crossed Jagannath University’s main gate, they began chanting louder slogans upon seeing police officers. When the police stepped aside, the march continued.
During the protest, a police vehicle in front of the CMM Court was set on fire.
Following the attack, the main gate of the CMM Court was locked. Lawyers and litigants are waiting outside and are unable to enter. After the incident, police stationed in front of Jagannath University moved towards the court area.
The anti-discrimination student movement has called for a full-fledged non-cooperation movement nationwide from Sunday. Protesters have also called for demonstrations and public gatherings at key points across the country at 11 am.
