Chasing a modest target of 125 runs against Sri Lanka, the Bangladesh team faced significant challenges. Despite reaching victory in 19 overs, they lost 8 wickets. The team, which has been struggling in the T20 format, found solace in defeating a major team on the world stage. However, the inconsistency among most of the batters remains a concern. Nevertheless, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto defended his team.
At the post-match press conference in Dallas’s Grand Prairie Stadium, the Tiger captain stated that he was not worried about the batters’ poor performance despite the tough match.
“I don’t think there’s much to worry about. It was a very pressure-filled match. At the end of the day, we wanted to win. If we think about the result, we got two points.”
“The batters know that we did not bat well. But not everyone will perform well every day. Hridoy played a very good innings. Riyad Bhai finished the match. Liton gave a good start after a long time. Some areas are good. I hope that the batter who gets set on the wicket will win the match. I don’t expect all seven batters to perform well.”
The constant failure of the openers in the Bangladesh batting order has become a persistent worry. At critical times, no one seems to score runs. Soumya Sarkar gifted a catch in the first over without scoring, and Tanzid Hasan Tamim managed only three runs.
When asked about how the rest of the batters’ task became difficult due to the early dismissal of the openers, Shanto expressed his clear opinion.
“The game is not just for the openers. All seven or eight of us who bat have responsibilities. As a captain, I want whoever gets settled on the wicket and gets a good start to finish the game. I hope that the openers will give a good start and finish the game in the next match. Now I am very optimistic that everyone will do well.”
