After losing their first World Cup match to South Africa, Sri Lanka has now been defeated by Bangladesh in their second match in the tournament. With two consecutive losses, Wanindu Hasaranga’s team faces the risk of exiting from the group stage. Explaining the loss against Bangladesh, the Lankan captain said that while bowling is their strength, the batters did not perform their duties well.
At the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas on Saturday, Bangladesh sent Sri Lanka to bat first after winning the toss. Faced with fierce bowling from leg-spinner Rishad Hossain and Mustafizur Rahman, Sri Lanka scored 124 runs for 9 wickets in 20 overs. In reply, Team Tigers reached the target in 19 overs, losing 8 wickets and winning by 2 wickets with 6 balls to spare.
Hasaranga said, “The batters played well in the first 8-10 overs. I think we batted poorly afterward. Our bowling attack is our strength. It would have been better if the batters had given the team a total of 150-160 runs.”
“Our batters did not perform well in the last two matches. This made things even more difficult for the bowlers. All four of our main bowlers did their jobs properly.”
With 2 points each, South Africa and the Netherlands are level with Bangladesh but ahead in the D-group table due to a better run rate. Sri Lanka is at the bottom with two consecutive losses.
