The government is closely monitoring the overseas activities of the Awami League, despite its operations being banned within Bangladesh, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said on Sunday.
Speaking at a press conference at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka about the CA’s upcoming visit to Malaysia, Shafiqul Alam made the remarks in response to journalists’ questions.
“In Bangladesh, their activities are banned. Therefore, we are closely monitoring their activities abroad,” he said.
He added: We are also investigating whether they are attempting to create any instability across the country.
Deputy Press Secretary to the CA, Abul Kalam Azad Majumder, and Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Shah Asif Rahman, were also present at the press conference.
A recent BBC Bangla report stated that the Awami League has opened a “party office” in a commercial complex in Kolkata.
In May this year, the interim government banned all activities of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations under the Anti-Terrorism Act until the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) completes its trials.
The gazette issued at the time declared that all forms of publication, media engagement, online and social media campaigns, rallies, meetings, gatherings, and conferences by the party and its affiliates were strictly prohibited.
Earlier, at a special meeting of the Advisory Council, it was decided to ban all activities of the Awami League, including cyber operations, under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
At that time, Law Adviser Professor Asif Nazrul stated that the decision was made to protect national security and sovereignty, safeguard leaders and activists of the July Movement, and ensure the safety of witnesses and plaintiffs in the tribunal proceedings.
