Former West Bengal Chief Minister and veteran CPM leader Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has passed away at the age of 80. His family announced his death on Thursday, August 8, in the morning.
According to Anandabazar, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s son, Suchetan Bhattacharjee, said that he had breakfast in the morning and then fell ill. He passed away at 8:20 AM at his residence on Palm Avenue.
Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was the second and last Chief Minister of the 34-year Left Front rule in West Bengal. He served as the state’s Chief Minister from 2000 to 2011 for 11 consecutive years.
Buddhadeb returned home from the hospital on August 9 last year. On July 29, he was admitted to a private hospital in South Kolkata in critical condition. He was kept on invasive ventilation support for several days. He was diagnosed with pneumonia, and severe infections were found in his lungs and respiratory tract.
