Following an extended heatwave, at least five individuals, including two women, tragically lost their lives to lightning strikes while working during a storm in two separate districts. The incidents occurred in Gopalganj and Shariatpur districts last evening amidst stormy weather.
According to sources from BSS on Tuesday, May 7, two deaths were reported from Gopalganj district. On Monday evening, in the Kashiani upazila’s Pathargram and Kotalipara upazila’s Amtoli, two individuals were fatally struck by lightning.
The deceased are identified as Sukanta, a 52-year-old rice harvesting laborer, and Alamgir Sheikh, a 55-year-old farmer. Devdulal Biswas, the chairman of Hatiyara Union in Kashiani upazila, confirmed the incident, stating that Sukanta was struck by lightning during a downpour while working in the fields. Sukanta had recently traveled from his home in Batiaghata, Khulna, to Pathargram for harvesting work.
In another incident in Kotalipara upazila’s Amtoli village, farmer Alamgir Sheikh was killed by lightning. He was a resident of the same village, son of Kasem Ali Sheikh.
Additionally, in Shariatpur district, lightning claimed the lives of three more individuals in the upazilas of Jajira and Vedorganj.
The victims include Amena Begum, 30, daughter of Altu Majhi from Painpara village in Jajira upazila; Abdul Hannan, 27, son of Tohibur Hossain from Telipara area of Joldanga upazila in Nilphamari district; and Kulsom Begum, 35, wife of Nechar Uddin Majhi from Berachakki village in Charcensus Union of Vedorganj upazila.
