All social media platforms in the country will have their cache servers reopened by Wednesday (31 July) afternoon, allowing for uninterrupted access to Facebook, WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, and YouTube, announced State Minister for Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak.
On Wednesday morning (31 July), he held an online meeting with representatives of Meta at the BTRC building in Agargaon, Dhaka. While representatives from TikTok and Facebook were present at today’s meeting, YouTube has scheduled a new meeting.
High-level officials from the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) also attended the meeting.
The meeting was held online with Meta’s Asia headquarters in Singapore. Discussions included setting up an office in Bangladesh, enhancing fact-checking measures to address misinformation and disinformation, and various other contemporary issues.
On 28 July, the government summoned Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok to discuss some video content related to the quota reform movement. The letter asked for a reasonable explanation and instructed representatives to appear in person at the BTRC on 31 July.
Although Facebook was summoned to appear in person, they did not come to the BTRC and instead held the meeting online with Meta’s representatives.
