The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) has issued a statement regarding the violent clashes between two political groups in Kakrail on Friday night, reaffirming the Bangladesh government’s zero-tolerance stance against mob violence.
According to ISPR, the unrest began around 8 p.m. when leaders and activists of two rival political parties engaged in clashes, chasing and counter-chasing each other. Several people were injured in the incident. Police initially rushed to the scene and tried to bring the situation under control, but as the violence intensified, they sought the assistance of the army. When police officers intervened, they came under attack, leaving several members injured.
It said: Law enforcement officials repeatedly urged both sides to remain calm, disperse peacefully, and resolve differences within the framework of the law. However, a section of political activists ignored the appeals and attempted to escalate tensions through mob violence. Around 9 p.m., they carried out a torch procession, threw brickbats, and even tried to set fire to structures. The unrest also spread to Bijoynagar, Nayapaltan, and adjoining areas, severely disrupting public movement and causing widespread suffering.
Despite continuous efforts to resolve the situation peacefully, ISPR said the attackers launched organised assaults on law enforcement and army personnel. In order to ensure public safety, security forces were eventually compelled to use force. Five members of the Bangladesh Army were injured in the clashes.
ISPR reiterated that the government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy against all forms of mob violence. The Bangladesh Army, it said, stands firmly behind this decision and remains fully prepared to take strong action to safeguard public safety, uphold law and order, and restore peace.
