Two police officers, including an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), have been temporarily suspended in connection with the death of Abu Saeed, a student of Begum Rokeya University, during the quota reform movement in Rangpur.
Deputy Police Commissioner of Rangpur, Abu Maruf Hossain, confirmed this information on Saturday (3 August).
The suspended officers are ASI Amir Hossain from Rangpur Police Lines and Constable Sujan Chandra Roy from Tajhat Police Station. They were suspended for “unprofessional conduct” involving firing a shotgun.
Previously, the police had claimed that Saeed’s death was caused by gunfire and brickbats thrown by protesters. This was mentioned in the case’s First Information Report (FIR). However, an investigation is ongoing, and action will be taken against any police personnel found responsible. The police have requested to wait for the autopsy report for conclusive findings.
It is worth noting that on Tuesday (16 July) afternoon, during the quota reform movement, police and the Chhatra League attacked the protesters. Saeed, who was shot, was admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The deceased, Abu Saeed (25), was a twelfth-batch student of the English Department at Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur. He was the younger son of Mokbul Hossain from Babunpur village in Modankhali Union of Pirganj Upazila.
