Authorities enforced Section 144 in Chittagong University and its surrounding areas until midnight on Monday, following a series of violent clashes between students and local residents.
In addition, the university administration has suspended all scheduled examinations across departments until further notice.
The unrest reportedly began late Saturday night near Gate No. 2 of the campus in Zobra village.
According to local journalists, a dispute broke out when a female student, who rented accommodation in the area, attempted to enter her residence after 11 p.m. The building’s caretaker allegedly assaulted her during an argument, prompting the student to call her friends. The incident quickly escalated into a physical confrontation between students and locals, which continued until around 3 a.m.
Tensions flared again on Sunday morning as groups of locals gathered near the same area.
When students assembled in protest, fresh clashes erupted, leading to repeated waves of violence throughout the day. Witnesses reported that both sides used sticks and other objects during the confrontations.
University officials confirmed that Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Md. Kamal Uddin was among those injured in the violence, along with several students. The clashes, ongoing since Saturday night, left multiple people hurt and created a volatile situation around the campus.
In response, the administration announced emergency measures, including the imposition of Section 144– a ban on gatherings and protests– in an effort to restore order.
The suspension of all examinations was also declared to prevent further escalation and ensure the safety of students and staff.
