In a tragic escalation of the ongoing conflict, more than 100 Palestinians, including women and children, were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a school that had been serving as a shelter for displaced individuals in Gaza City. The attack, which occurred on August 10, 2024, targeted al-Tabin School in the Daraj district during morning prayers, leading to a devastating fire that engulfed the building.
According to Gaza’s civil defense agency, three Israeli bombs, each weighing 2,000 pounds (907 kg), struck the school, resulting in what authorities are calling a “horrific massacre.” The agency reports that the death toll is expected to rise as rescue teams continue to sift through the rubble.
The attack has drawn widespread condemnation from international organizations, including the United Nations and various NGOs. Qatar and Egypt, two key mediators in the region, have also condemned the strike, which comes at a time when efforts to negotiate a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas were reportedly gaining momentum.
Gaza’s Ministry of Health has reported that the victims included many who had already been displaced from their homes due to previous airstrikes. These individuals had sought refuge in the school, believing it to be a safe haven from the ongoing violence. Among the dead are survivors from earlier attacks on evacuation centers across the Gaza Strip.
Hossam Shabat, a Palestinian journalist reporting for Al Jazeera, described the scene at al-Ahli Hospital, where many of the wounded were brought. He reported that the hospital is overwhelmed and on the brink of collapse, unable to adequately care for the critically injured, many of whom are suffering from severe burns and shrapnel wounds.
The Israeli military has justified the airstrike by claiming that the school was being used as a command and control center by Hamas and Islamic Jihad fighters. According to the Israeli army, intelligence indicated that around 20 fighters, including senior commanders, were operating from within the school. However, they did not provide concrete evidence to support these claims.
This latest attack marks the fourth incident in a week where Israeli forces have targeted schools in Gaza, sparking outrage from Palestinian authorities and human rights organizations. Hamas has repeatedly denied that it uses civilian facilities such as schools and hospitals for military purposes.
The timing of the attack has raised suspicions among analysts and observers. Hassan Barari, a professor of international affairs at Qatar University, suggested that the strike could be part of a broader Israeli strategy to disrupt peace talks. “Every time there is progress towards negotiations, a large-scale Israeli attack derails these discussions,” Barari said.
The bombing comes just days before Qatar, Egypt, and the United States were scheduled to facilitate ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas. The ongoing conflict has claimed the lives of at least 39,790 Palestinians, with more than 92,000 wounded, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health. In Israel, the Hamas-led attacks on October 7 resulted in the deaths of 1,139 people, with over 200 taken captive.
As the conflict continues to escalate, the humanitarian situation in Gaza is deteriorating rapidly. The international community is calling for an immediate ceasefire and greater efforts to protect civilians caught in the crossfire. For the people of Gaza, however, the prospect of peace remains uncertain as they endure one of the most intense and deadly periods of violence in recent history.
