The Chamber Court of Supreme Court has stayed the High Court’s order that had halted the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election process until October 30, clearing the way for the polls to proceed.
Earlier on Monday, a High Court bench of Justice Md. Habibul Gani and Justice Sheikh Tahsin Ali issued a ruling, staying the DUCSU election process until October 30.
The order came following a writ petition filed by Fahmida Alam, a candidate for Liberation War and Democratic Movement Affairs Secretary from the left alliance panel. She had challenged the candidacy of SM Farhad, the General Secretary (GS) candidate nominated by the United Students’ Alliance of the Islami Chhatra Shibir.
In response, Dhaka University quickly filed a handwritten petition with the Chamber Court of Justice Farah Mahbub of the Appellate Division, seeking suspension of the High Court’s order. After hearing the plea, the Chamber Court suspended the High Court’s directive until a further hearing is held on Tuesday.
DU’s counsel, Advocate Mohammad Shishir Monir, confirmed that until Tuesday’s hearing, the High Court’s stay order will remain stayed, meaning there is no obstacle to continuing the DUCSU election process.
Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua appeared on behalf of the petitioner in the High Court, while Advocate Mohammad Shishir Monir represented Dhaka University.
