The International Crimes Tribunal has issued arrest warrants against former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Javed Patwary and four others over allegations of staging a “militant drama” and killing seven people in Gazipur in 2016.

The three-member Tribunal-1, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumder, passed the order on Monday following a prosecution petition.

According to case records, seven young men were picked up from different parts of the country and confined in a house in Gazipur in October 2016. The house was locked from outside, and the victims were later shot dead in what was portrayed as an anti-militant operation.

The father of one victim, madrasa student Ibrahim, filed a complaint with the International Crimes Tribunal, accusing law enforcement officials of crimes against humanity.

After a preliminary investigation, prosecutors sought arrest warrants against Patwary, then head of the Special Branch (SB) of police, along with four others.

Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim represented the prosecution during Monday’s hearing.
