On the first day of the nationwide non-cooperation movement called by the anti-discrimination student movement, protesters in Comilla set fire to vehicles, blocked roads with logs, and staged demonstrations on the highway.
Awami League leaders and activists are present to counter the protesters.
It has been reported that around 11 am on Sunday (4 August), protesters blocked the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in the Elliottganj area of Daudkandi Upazila, Comilla. They set fire to a private car parked on the road near the Reliable CNG and Petroleum Filling Station. The entire car was burned on the road. They also reportedly vandalized the filling station.
Elsewhere, a group of protesters blocked the Dhaka-Chittagong highway at Nazirabazar in Burichang Upazila. They were seen marching towards Alekhar Char on the highway.
Moinamoti Crossing Highway Police Station OC Iqbal Bahar stated that protesters had blocked the road in Elliottganj. There are almost no vehicles on the highway.
The impact of the movement has left the Comilla-Sylhet highway empty as well. Since Sunday morning, protesters have created obstacles by placing logs on various parts of the highway. They later set fire to logs and tires in the Vidalla area of Debidwar Upazila. Many pedestrians were seen walking to their destinations due to the absence of vehicles.
Meanwhile, Awami League leaders have taken positions in the Kotbari area of the Dhaka-Chittagong highway to counter the protesters. They were seen checking various vehicles and turning back anyone suspected of being a protester. Awami League activists were also seen at various intersections in Comilla city.
