Rice Prices Remain High Despite Stability in Other Essentials
While prices of many essential commodities in the market have stabilized, rice prices continue to remain high, causing concern among consumers. Seasonal vegetables, onions, and potatoes have seen a significant drop in prices, bringing relief to buyers. However, the expected reduction in rice prices has not materialized, leaving customers disheartened.
On Friday, January 24, a visit to the local market revealed that winter vegetables are now the primary source of relief for shoppers. Most winter vegetables are priced between 30 to 40 BDT per kilogram, making them accessible to the general public. Vendors noted that this price trend is likely to continue for the coming weeks, ensuring affordability for consumers.
Egg prices, which had been a source of concern for months, have also stabilized. A dozen eggs are now being sold at 130 to 135 BDT, providing a sigh of relief to buyers. Locally produced onions are priced at 50 BDT per kilogram, and potatoes are available for 25 to 30 BDT per kilogram, reflecting a stable trend in the market.
In the poultry section, broiler chicken is selling for 200 to 210 BDT per kilogram, while the price of Sonali chicken has dropped slightly to 340 BDT per kilogram, compared to last week’s rates.
However, rice prices remain a major concern. Despite minor reductions, the current rates are still significantly higher than what is typical for this season. Consumers have expressed their dissatisfaction and are urging the government to take immediate action to bring rice prices down.
While the overall market situation offers some respite with affordable vegetables and stable prices for other essentials, the persistent high cost of rice continues to burden households. Immediate measures are needed to address this issue and ensure relief for consumers, particularly those with limited incomes.
