Families of the July massacre victims and injured survivors staged a sit-in on Tuesday in front of the Secretariat in the capital, demanding the resignation of interim government’s Law Adviser Asif Nazrul.
The demonstrators first gathered in front of the National Press Club around 11:15 a.m., before marching towards Gate No. 2 of the Secretariat at around 12:30 p.m.
Their protest blocked traffic in the area, as they chanted slogans such as: “Resign, resign, Asif Nazrul must resign,” “One demand, one solution– resignation of Asif Nazrul,” and “My brother lies in the grave, why are the killers still free?”
They alleged that accused perpetrators of the July massacre were securing bail in exchange for money, while no visible legal steps were being taken.
Many protesters accused the government of turning justice into a “mockery.”
Bulbul Karim, father of slain Alif Ahmed Siam, said: Even after one year, we have not seen justice for my son’s killing. The government is playing a game in the name of justice. Accused killers are buying bail with money, while the law adviser does nothing.
Rabiul Awal, brother of martyr Tayem, echoed the demand for Nazrul’s resignation. Abdul Matin, father of martyr Sheikh Shahriar, said, “For a year, we have gone door to door seeking justice. Even the law ministry has made a mockery of our suffering.”
Aminul Islam, one of the injured, warned that if survivors return to the streets again, the consequences would be severe: “We are not afraid of anyone. The government should remember this.”
Abul Hasan, father of slain Shahriar Hasan Alvi, said: It is painful to see that one year after the massacre, we must come out to demand the resignation of the law adviser. We spoke to him many times, but he only offered consolation without action.
Earlier, when the families and survivors attempted to march toward the Secretariat, police intercepted them, leading to scuffles.
Safat Siddiqui, mother of martyr Ahnaf, accused police of verbally abusing families and physically assaulting her: “Police insulted us with vile words. I was kicked by an officer. We are here with a just demand, and we will not leave without it.”
Masud Alam, DC of Ramna Division Police, said the protesters’ demands would be conveyed to the authorities but added that the blockade was causing public suffering. On allegations of police assault, he said, “If such incidents occurred, we will take steps after proper investigation.”
