Portugal played their second match in Group F of the Euros against Turkey, battering them 3–0. This win for Portugal has confirmed their spot in the Round of 16 in the tournament. Turkey were not prepared well for the match as they have not played a few of their star players. Portugal and Turkey had the same amount of shot on target but only Portugal could profit from them. There were many pitch invaders in this match trying to take pictures with one of the greatest players to play this sport, Cristiano Ronaldo. This man currently holds the joint record of most assists the Euros with Czech Republic’s Karel Poborsky, eight each.
Portugal had gotten two early chances to score from but failed. In the 21st minute Bernardo Silva had scored to make it 1-0. In the 28th minute Joao Cancelo had dribbled past a few Turkish players but his missed pass went to Turkey’s Samet Akaydin who passed it to the keeper, but the keeper could not get the ball unfortunately, which led to an own goal, making it 2-0 for the Portuguese. The Turkish forward Akturkoglu had almost scored in the 30th minute but a heroic save from Diogo Costa denied the score from being 2-1. Ronaldo took a shot outside the box in the 36th minute which went wide.
In the second half, a defensive error from the Turkish defence in the 55th minute led to Ronaldo get the ball with no defenders to stop him, he had a golden chance to score but decided to pass the ball to Bruno Fernandes who tapped the ball into the net to make the score 3-1. The Portuguese had gotten two more chances in the 87th minute and in the 90th minute. The first one was stopped by the goalkeeper and the second chance was blocked by the defence of Turkey.
Portugal’s emphatic 3-0 victory over Turkey not only confirmed their place in the Round of 16 but also showcased their dominance and clinical finishing. Despite both teams having an equal number of shots on target, Portugal’s ability to capitalize on their chances made the difference.
