Nationwide Gas Crisis to Persist Until Monday
A severe gas shortage has gripped the entire country, affecting households, CNG stations, and industries. From Friday, January 10 to Monday, January 13, gas supply from the floating LNG terminal in Maheshkhali will be suspended for 72 hours due to maintenance and repair work. As a result, gas pressure in various regions of the country will remain low, according to Petrobangla.
In a press release issued on Thursday (January 9), Deputy General Manager (Public Relations) of Petrobangla, Tariqul Islam Khan, stated that the supply of re-gasified LNG (RLNG) from Maheshkhali’s FSRU will be halted from 12 PM Friday to 12 PM Monday. During this period, around 550 to 560 million cubic feet of gas per day will continue to be supplied from another FSRU.
The release further mentioned that due to the reduced supply, certain areas of the country will experience low gas pressure. Petrobangla has apologized for the inconvenience caused by this temporary disruption.
The crisis has particularly impacted households, where people are struggling to manage cooking due to the lack of piped gas. Many have resorted to using cylinder gas and electric stoves. Meanwhile, long queues have formed at CNG stations, with low pressure making refueling difficult.
This shortage, exacerbated by the shutdown of one LNG terminal, has reduced daily gas supply by nearly 500 million cubic feet, worsening an already low-pressure situation that persists year-round. Despite acknowledging the inconvenience, Petrobangla has not provided any immediate solution other than expressing regret over the situation.
