The Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) has declared a national day of mourning on Monday, May 13, to mark the death of their esteemed advisor, Comrade Haider Akbar Khan Rono. This announcement was made through a press release issued on Saturday, May 11, following his death.
In the statement, the leadership of the CPB expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Haider Akbar Khan, whom they described as a lifelong patriot and a dedicated fighter for the liberation of the people from oppression. They remembered him for his unwavering participation in various democratic and socialist movements, including the Education Movement of 1962, the anti-autocracy struggle against Pakistan, the Liberation War of Bangladesh, and subsequent efforts to establish a secular, democratic, and socialist state.
Comrade Rono, who began his political journey in student activism, later played a significant role in labor movements, accelerating the liberation struggle for the working class. Despite prolonged illness, he continued to fulfill his responsibilities within the CPB, contributing tirelessly to the advancement of the organization and never stepping back from his commitments.
Leaders and activists across the country have expressed their profound grief over his passing, extending heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family and committing to continue his legacy by intensifying the struggle for a socialist society in Bangladesh.
According to the CPB’s schedule, Haider Akbar Khan’s body was brought to his residence in Dhanmondi, Dhaka, on the morning of May 11, where party leaders, members, and other organizations paid their respects. His body was then moved to Shamorita Hospital’s morgue.
On May 13, his body will be brought to the CPB’s central office, Mukti Bhaban, at 10 a.m. for party members to pay their last respects. At 11 a.m., his body will be taken to the Central Shaheed Minar to allow the public to honor his memory. A funeral prayer will be held at 1:30 p.m. at the central mosque of Dhaka University, followed by burial at the Banani Graveyard.
In honor of Comrade Haider Akbar Khan, the CPB has also planned to lower party flags to half-mast, raise black flags at all party offices nationwide, and hold tribute sessions to commemorate his life and contributions to the country’s political and social realms.
