Amidst severe heatwave conditions, a significant fire has erupted covering nearly two kilometers of the Sundarbans. The fire was first noticed by local fishermen around 3:45 PM, Saturday (May 4), in the forest area near Amur Bunia patrol station within the Chandpai Range of the Eastern Sundarbans Forest Division. Upon receiving the news, the Forest Department and locals have begun efforts to controle the fire.
Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) of Chandpai Range, Rana Deb, confirmed the incident and stated that their four patrol teams, along with local residents, have initiated firefighting operations.
Meanwhile, the Fire Service reported that due to the fire’s location deep within the forest and the onset of night, no units could reach the scene today. They have started working plan to commence firefighting efforts Sunday morning (May 5).
Kazi Mohammad Nurul Karim, the Divisional Forest Officer of the Eastern Sundarbans Forest Division, mentioned that upon receiving news of the fire, the forest workers, along with locals, started efforts to extinguish the fire Saturday afternoon. Bagerhat Fire Service and Civil Defense has already started working to controle the blaze.
