Following the detection of Human Metapneumovirus (HMpv) in Bangladesh for the first time, after it caused significant alarm in China and other neighboring countries, the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport Authority has issued special precautionary measures. On Monday (January 13), the airport’s Executive Director Kamrul Islam issued letters to all airlines and stakeholders associated with the airport, urging them to take preventive steps to manage the situation effectively.

Instructions for Passengers and Airport Staff

In the directive issued by the airport authority, it was stated that according to the guidelines provided by the Disease Control Branch of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), all concerned personnel at the airport must remain vigilant regarding HMpv and take necessary precautions. The specific instructions for passengers, staff, and visitors include:

  1. Wearing face masks is mandatory.
  2. Using hand sanitizers frequently.
  3. Anyone showing symptoms such as fever, cough, or breathing difficulties must immediately report to the health services desk at the airport.

Extra Precautions for Airlines

Both local and international airlines operating in Bangladesh have been instructed to maintain heightened vigilance, especially for passengers arriving from countries where HMpv cases have been reported. Airlines have also been directed to implement necessary precautionary measures during boarding and deplaning.

No Need for Panic Yet, But Stay Alert

The airport authority assured that there is no reason to panic at this moment. However, everyone is advised to remain cautious. Passengers, staff, and visitors have been encouraged to follow health protocols diligently. Additional healthcare facilities and support will be available at the airport for anyone exhibiting symptoms of the virus.

What is Human Metapneumovirus (HMpv)?

HMpv is a respiratory virus that can cause mild symptoms such as the common cold or severe conditions like bronchiolitis and pneumonia. Its symptoms usually include:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Sore throat

The virus can pose serious health risks, particularly to children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.

Government’s Preparedness and Public Awareness

The government has taken additional steps to enhance screening and precautionary measures at all airports and border checkpoints. Authorities have urged the public not to panic but to maintain hygiene and follow safety guidelines strictly. People are encouraged to consult a doctor immediately if they experience any of the symptoms associated with HMpv.
