For the first time in Bangladesh, a death has been reported in connection with the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV). The deceased, identified as Sanjida Akter (30), passed away on Wednesday night (January 16) while undergoing treatment at the Infectious Diseases Hospital in Mohakhali, Dhaka.

Confirmation of the Death

The hospital’s superintendent, Dr. Ariful Bashar, confirmed the death, stating:“This is the first reported death of a person diagnosed with HMPV in Bangladesh. However, it cannot be definitively said that the virus was the primary cause of death, as the patient had pre-existing severe health complications.”

Dr. Bashar further explained that the deceased was suffering from kidney complications and obesity, which exacerbated her condition. HMPV acted as a secondary infection, worsening her already fragile state.

What is HMPV?

Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus primarily affecting children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Symptoms of HMPV:

  1. Shortness of breath
  2. Fever
  3. Sore throat
  4. Cough
  5. Fatigue

Health Condition of the Patient

Sources at the hospital revealed that the deceased had severe kidney complications and was suffering from obesity. The secondary HMPV infection likely aggravated her pre-existing conditions, leading to her death.

Expert Opinions

Health experts have emphasized that while HMPV is primarily a respiratory virus, it can be fatal for individuals with underlying health issues. They also noted the need for increased awareness and precautions to prevent further cases.

Preventive Measures

  1. Wearing masks in crowded places.
  2. Regular handwashing and using hand sanitizers.
  3. Seeking medical advice promptly for respiratory symptoms.
  4. Avoiding public gatherings if symptoms of respiratory infection are present.

The first reported death linked to HMPV in Bangladesh underscores the need for vigilance. Although the virus may not have been the direct cause of death, it is a wake-up call for public health authorities and citizens to take preventive measures seriously. Adhering to hygiene protocols and seeking timely medical attention for respiratory issues can help reduce the spread and impact of HMPV.
