mild earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale was felt in Dhaka and several regions across Bangladesh on Friday, January 3, at 10:32 AM. The tremor, which occurred during a period of intense cold, caused panic among residents but no immediate reports of damage or casualties have been received.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the earthquake’s epicenter was located 531 kilometers from Dhaka and 128 kilometers southeast of Phek district in the Indian state of Nagaland.
Residents in various parts of the country, including the capital, reported experiencing the tremor, with many rushing out of buildings in fear. Authorities have assured the public that there is no significant risk from aftershocks based on current data but advised caution and preparedness.
Experts have noted that the region’s seismic activity is not unusual due to its proximity to tectonic plate boundaries. However, the timing of the earthquake, amid an ongoing cold wave, added to the unease among people.

The Meteorological Department continues to monitor the situation and urges residents to stay informed through official channels.
