The Bangladesh Army on Thursday said it will not be deployed in the upcoming Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) and hall union elections.
In a statement, the Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR) said no instructions had been given by the government for the army to take part in the polls.
“The army has not been assigned such duties for DUCSU or any other student union elections, nor will it have such a role in the future,” it said.
The ISPR added that the elections would be conducted peacefully with the support of law enforcement agencies under the supervision of the university administration.
The clarification came after media reports, quoting university authorities, suggested the army will be engaged as part of a three-tier security arrangement.
Earlier this week, Chief Returning Officer Professor Golam Rabbani had said troops could act as a “striking force” and be stationed at key entry points to the campus.
The army, however, said no such deployment order had been issued.
