As the scorching heatwave makes life unbearable, people are flocking to electronic markets. In the country’s market, while the price of a one-ton air conditioner (AC) exceeds 60,000 taka and a one-and-a-half ton AC surpasses 70,000 taka, consumers are increasingly turning towards reconditioned ACs. They are visiting various shops in Baridhara, Jatrabari, and Tejgaon.

Rabiul Islam from Uttara visited Messrs Abdur Rahim Electronics in Jatrabari. He works in the private sector and shared that he has been hopping from one shop to another to buy an AC for his family. Initially, he visited shops selling new ACs, but the high prices ranging from 60,000 to 70,000 taka have now turned his attention to reconditioned units. He noted that these shops also offer good quality ACs within a price range of 20,000 to 25,000 taka.

Tejgaon AC seller Kabir Hossain said: Throughout the year, they engage in AC washing and repair for homes and offices, but sales peak now. Although the demand for reconditioned ACs is moderate throughout the year, it significantly increases during April, May and June. These ACs are often sourced from offices, homes, restaurants and embassies, he informed Channel I Online.

Various international brands’ ACs ranging from one to five tons are available in these reconditioned AC shops, starting from 16,000 to 20,000 taka.

Kabir Hossain shared: They are selling one-and-a-half-ton ‘Gree’ ACs for 28,000 taka, two-ton ‘Butterfly’ ACs for 28,000 to 30,000 taka, and one-ton ‘Minister’ ACs for 16,000 taka. ‘Haier’ one-and-a-half-ton inverter ACs are being sold for 28,000 taka. The prices of new ACs in the market range from 60,000 to 100,000 taka and we are selling them for about one-third of these prices.

Not only are homes and offices buying these reconditioned ACs but restaurants also opt for them, according to sellers. However, there is a higher demand for one to one-and-a-half-ton ACs for residential use.

To attract customers, sellers are also offering after-sales services for these ACs. They maintain after-sales services ranging from six months to a year. Additionally, they inform customers about any prior issues that were repaired. Since electronic items like ACs can potentially cause severe issues at any time, they advise caution when purchasing reconditioned ACs.
