An enormous controversy has erupted in Karnataka, India, as thousands of videos allegedly depicting Prajwal Revanna, a Member of Parliament, sexually abusing women have been circulated. This incident has led to widespread public outrage and an ongoing police investigation.
Prajwal Revanna, representing the Janata Dal (Secular) party, which is currently allied with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party, is at the centre of these accusations. The scandal surfaced right after Revanna’s constituency, Hassan, voted in the general elections on April 26.
According to reports, over 2,000 pen drives containing the videos were found scattered in public places like bus stands and parks, and were also widely shared on social media platforms. The Indian Express revealed that these videos appear to be self-recorded by Revanna, showcasing the distressing scenes of the alleged abuse.
Amidst the scandal, the Karnataka state’s women’s commission has demanded a rigorous investigation, leading to the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) by Chief Minister K Siddaramaiah. The situation is further complicated by accusations against Revanna’s father, HD Revanna, also a prominent politician, who is implicated in the case by a former employee.
The political ramifications are significant, with the Janata Dal (Secular) suspending Prajwal Revanna and distancing itself from the scandal. The BJP has also refrained from commenting on the investigation, stating that the matter is unrelated to the party.
The case has caused a stir in political circles, with many questioning the decision to allow Prajwal Revanna to leave the country amid such serious allegations. The situation remains tense as both the state and national political figures navigate the fallout of this disturbing revelation.
