A high-level medical board has been formed at Dhaka Medical College Hospital to oversee the treatment of Gonodhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur, who sustained serious injuries during Friday’s clashes in the capital’s Kakrail.
Brigadier General Md Asaduzzaman, director of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said on Saturday morning that Nurul Haque suffered a head injury and a fractured nasal bone, which caused heavy bleeding.
“The bleeding has now stopped and he has regained consciousness. However, it cannot be said that he is out of danger until at least 48 hours pass,” he told reporters.
He added that the medical board was constituted late Friday night and would meet on Saturday to review Nurul Haque’s condition and treatment plan.
The clashes erupted on Friday evening when a Gonodhikar Parishad procession passed in front of the Jatiya Party (JaPa) office in Kakrail, triggering a confrontation between activists of the two parties. Law enforcement later intervened, and several people, including Nurul Haque, were injured.
Gonodhikar Parishad claimed that their procession came under attack by JaPa supporters, while JaPa alleged that it was the Gonodhikar activists who initiated the assault.
Later in the night, Gonodhikar Parishad General Secretary Rashed Khan told reporters that their leaders, including Nurul Haque, Nur were preparing to hold a press conference around 9:30 p.m. when police and army personnel attacked them.
“Our president Nurul Haque and more than a hundred activists were injured. Six, including Nurul Haque, have been admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital,” he said.
In response, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) issued a statement Friday saying security forces had repeatedly urged both sides to maintain calm and disperse peacefully. However, some activists ignored the appeals, launched organised attacks on law enforcement, and intensified violence with a torch procession around 9 p.m. by throwing brickbats and attempting arson.
ISPR confirmed that five army personnel were injured in the incident and said security forces were ultimately compelled to use force to protect public safety.
