In recent months, reports of systematic abuse and isolation of prominent Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails have surfaced, highlighting what rights groups describe as deliberate targeting. Freed detainees have provided harrowing testimonies of the abuse, painting a grim picture of the conditions faced by high-profile Palestinian prisoners.
Brutal Beatings and Isolation
The family of Ibrahim Hamed, one of the longest-serving Palestinian prisoners, was recently informed of his severe beating by Israeli guards. Hamed, 59, is currently held in the notorious Gilboa prison, where he was reportedly left with his entire body covered in bruises and severe injuries. Adeeb al-Samoudi, a freed prisoner who witnessed the attack, described Hamed’s condition as life-threatening, with significant bleeding and multiple instances of lost consciousness.
Hamed, known for his role as a Hamas leader during the Second Intifada, was sentenced to life imprisonment 54 times by Israel in 2006. His wife, Asma, was deported to Jordan in 2004, and she, along with their two children, has not seen him since.
Inhumane Conditions
Ali Hamed, Ibrahim’s son, expressed deep concern over his father’s health, noting that Ibrahim suffers from herniated discs and relies on multiple medications. The family is seeking legal avenues to allow a lawyer and a private doctor to visit Ibrahim, fearing the severity of his untreated injuries.
In testimony given to Middle East Eye (MEE), Samoudi detailed the harsh treatment of prisoners, including a policy of starvation and the confiscation of possessions since October 7. The recent transfer of Hamed to Gilboa prison has left the family in a state of uncertainty, with no updates on his condition or further incidents of abuse.
Targeting Prominent Figures
Qaddoura Fares, head of the Palestinian Commission for Detainees and Ex-Prisoners’ Affairs, stated that the targeting of prominent Palestinian leaders has intensified since the start of the Gaza war. Marwan Barghouti, a member of the Fatah Central Committee, has been repeatedly beaten and transferred between prisons, leaving him in solitary confinement and suffering from severe weight loss.
Barghouti, a popular figure among Palestinians, has been imprisoned since 2002 and is currently serving a life sentence. His solitary confinement and reported abuse raise concerns about Israel’s intentions to suppress influential Palestinian voices.
Widespread Abuse
Families of Palestinian prisoners are alarmed by the accounts of torture and abuse shared by released detainees. The Israeli prison administration has isolated representatives of various Palestinian factions, subjecting them to severe beatings aimed at causing lasting physical and psychological damage.
Nael Barghouti, considered an icon of Palestinian prisoners with 44 years of detention, has faced repeated beatings, resulting in broken ribs and other serious injuries. His family reports that he was denied medical treatment despite his severe condition.
Calls for Justice
Rights groups and families are calling for international intervention and accountability for the treatment of Palestinian prisoners. The deliberate targeting and abuse of high-profile detainees highlight the urgent need for oversight and protection within the Israeli prison system.
As these testimonies come to light, the international community faces mounting pressure to address the human rights violations occurring in Israeli jails and to ensure the humane treatment of all prisoners.
