Global condemnation is escalating after the Israeli military confirmed it assassinated five Al Jazeera journalists, including renowned correspondent Anas al-Sharif, in a targeted drone strike on their media tent in Gaza City. The attack outside al-Shifa Hospital is being branded by Al Jazeera Media Network as a “blatant and premeditated attack on press freedom” and a desperate attempt to silence reporting on its ongoing atrocities in the besieged enclave.
In a statement, the Israeli military claimed responsibility for the killings, repeating unsubstantiated allegations that al-Sharif was a member of Hamas. The United Nations, press freedom groups, and local officials have fiercely condemned the attack, calling for an end to the systematic targeting of journalists.
The slain journalists—correspondents Anas al-Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqeh, and camera operators Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal, and Moamen Aliwa—were among the last voices reporting from inside a city devastated by 22 months of war.
Gaza’s Health Ministry Director-General, Munir al-Bursh, paid a moving tribute, calling them “the eyes of Gaza, reporting the truth from the rubble.” He confirmed the journalists had told him they were “constantly threatened” by the Israeli military. “Our grief for Anas al-Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqeh is grief for the truth and the free voice,” he said.
Reporting from Gaza City, Al Jazeera’s Hani Mahmoud said his murdered colleagues were targeted for exposing Israeli crimes. “They were covering the unfolding horror… the atrocity of the enforced starvation, the dehydration, malnourishment and death,” he said. “The Israeli military was not happy about the coverage.”
The international community has begun to respond to the killings. Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, condemned the attack, stating, “We have always been very clear in condemning all killings of journalists. In Gaza, and everywhere, media workers should be able to carry out their work freely and without harassment, intimidation or fear of being targeted.”
Al Jazeera Media Network released a powerful statement holding the Israeli government directly responsible for a “targeted assassination.” The network stated the attack followed “repeated incitement and calls by multiple Israeli officials and spokespersons to target the fearless journalist Anas Al Sharif and his colleagues.”
“The order to assassinate Anas Al Sharif… is a desperate attempt to silence the voices exposing the impending seizure and occupation of Gaza,” the statement read. “Al Jazeera Media Network calls on the international community… to take decisive measures to halt this ongoing genocide and end the deliberate targeting of journalists.”
The network emphasized that its journalists remained in Gaza while international media were barred, experiencing the same hunger and suffering they documented. With over 200 journalists killed by Israel since October 2023, the attack is seen as a continuation of a brutal campaign to eliminate witnesses.
Chillingly, Hani Mahmoud noted that Israel is “threatening publicly that this is scoring a victory, by targeting and killing journalists.” This brazen admission, he warned, signals that the coming days will be even more difficult and that the deliberate silencing of the press serves the Israeli military’s ultimate goals.
