It was March 26, 2024, a sunny day in Chennai. After days of relentless rain, the sun finally showed its face. I had planned to meet an individual who not only inspires many with disabilities through his initiatives but also stands as a beacon of perseverance and hope.

My journey took me to the Vidya Sagar institution in Kotturpuram, a place bustling with vibrant spirits. Here, people with various disabilities thrive through work, games, and social gatherings. It wasn’t long before I spotted a man in a white shirt, alighting from an auto-rickshaw with assistance from the driver. His white attire mirrored his inner purity and grace. Pinned to his shirt was a badge, a symbol for those who require special support to move independently.

“I have been advocating for a disabled-friendly pathway at Marina Beach for the last six years,” Sathish Kumar R, aged 39, shared with me. His dream was realized when the Greater Chennai Corporation inaugurated the pathway on November 27, 2022. Sathish’s dedication spans over a decade, advocating for better accessibility for disabled individuals. “Now, those who rely on wheelchairs can enjoy the beach too,” he added, reflecting on the diverse group of people who attended the inauguration, some experiencing the seaside for the first time.

Sathish, who has lived with cerebral palsy since birth—a condition often caused by a lack of oxygen during childbirth—grew up in a supportive joint family. “They never saw me as a burden,” he expressed with gratitude. His condition varies, as does for many with cerebral palsy; some struggle to speak or react, while others might face milder or more severe challenges.

From an early age, Sathish was confined to home-bound routines, with hospital visits being his only outings. His parents, recognizing the benefits of social interactions, enrolled him in Vidya Sagar after consulting with his doctor and meeting with Ms. Poonam Natarajan, the founder. “Vidya Sagar taught me to embrace challenges. It taught me that I can achieve anything,” Sathish stated. After years at Vidya Sagar, he transitioned to mainstream schooling and eventually pursued higher education, earning a master’s in HR and finance.

Sathish’s career began in marketing for a wheelchair manufacturer, and after numerous attempts, he secured a position as a bank clerk in 2013. His efforts for the community, however, extend beyond personal achievements. He has been a vocal advocate for accessible public spaces, collaborating with the Disability Rights Alliance to develop projects like the Marina Beach pathway.

Sathish also dreams of making public transport and other public spaces more accessible. “We’ve seen some improvements, but much more is needed for us to truly be a part of society,” he emphasized. His advocacy isn’t confined to actions alone; through his YouTube channel, he shares insights on accessible and non-accessible locations, raising awareness and pushing for change.

Reflecting on his journey and the support of his family, Sathish concluded, “Their support made my life’s journey feasible. I aspire to give back to them just as they have supported me throughout.”

Sathish’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact of community and resilience. His ongoing efforts not only improve the lives of many but also challenge societal perceptions, paving the way towards a more inclusive world.
