Nobel Laureate economist Dr. Muhammad Yunus has urged the nation to trust and believe in him, ensuring that there will be no attacks or violence anywhere in the country.
He made this statement at a conference upon arriving in Dhaka from Paris on Thursday, August 8.
Dr. Yunus said, “All of Bangladesh is one family. We all want to move forward together. All the attacks happening are part of conspiracies. Our task is to protect everyone from these. Disorder and violence are major enemies of progress. If you consider me necessary, you must listen to me.”
He further stated, “Our oath is to ensure that Bangladesh moves forward rapidly. The government will protect the people and be trusted by them. No one should be attacked; everyone must be protected. The country must be safeguarded from disorder; with trust, the country can advance.”
Addressing the protesters, he expressed gratitude to the students who made this victory possible. “Just as you could achieve independence for the country, you can build it too. You have strength and creativity.”
Dr. Yunus returned to the country after receiving medical treatment in France. He is set to assume his role as the head of the interim government tonight. On Thursday, August 8, at around 2:10 PM Dhaka time, the flight carrying Dr. Yunus landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
He was welcomed at the airport by Army Chief Walker-uz-Zaman. From the airport, Dr. Yunus is scheduled to go directly to the state guest house Jamuna.
Following the dissolution of the 12th National Parliament, it was decided to form the next interim government with Dr. Muhammad Yunus as its head. This decision was made during a meeting with President Md. Sahabuddin, the heads of the three armed forces, and the coordinators of the student movement at Bangabhaban on Tuesday night, August 6.
