In a historic milestone for Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum has been elected as the nation’s first female president. Capturing the presidency with a promise of continuity, Sheinbaum’s victory marks a significant shift in the country’s political landscape. The 61-year-old former mayor of Mexico City ran a disciplined campaign that leveraged the popularity of her predecessor, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. However, with her victory now secured, many are eager to see how Sheinbaum, a different personality from her mentor, will assert her leadership.

A Background in Science

Claudia Sheinbaum’s ascent to Mexico’s highest office is notable for her unique background. Unlike many political figures, Sheinbaum comes from a scientific and academic background. She holds a Ph.D. in energy engineering, and her brother is a physicist. Her commitment to science has been a cornerstone of her public service career. In a 2023 interview with The Associated Press, Sheinbaum stated, “I believe in science,” underscoring her approach to policy-making.

This scientific grounding was particularly evident during her tenure as the mayor of Mexico City. During the COVID-19 pandemic, while the federal government under López Obrador was downplaying the severity of the virus and minimizing testing, Sheinbaum took a different route. She expanded testing, imposed limits on business operations to control the spread of the virus, and was a visible proponent of mask-wearing and social distancing. Her data-driven approach helped manage the pandemic more effectively in a city of nine million people, showcasing her capacity for pragmatic governance.

Political Alignment and Governance

Politically, Sheinbaum aligns closely with López Obrador, sharing his views on addressing inequality through government intervention. She has been a lifelong leftist, committed to the idea that the government should play a significant role in reducing poverty and inequality. However, Sheinbaum is viewed as less combative and more pragmatic compared to her mentor. While López Obrador often engaged in public battles with other branches of government and the media, Sheinbaum is expected to adopt a more measured approach.

Her policy priorities include continuing the expansion of the National Guard to combat Mexico’s persistent violence. She has pledged to address the social conditions that make young Mexicans vulnerable to cartel recruitment. “Let it be clear, it doesn’t mean an iron fist, wars, or authoritarianism,” Sheinbaum said during her final campaign event. “We will promote a strategy of addressing the causes and continue moving toward zero impunity.”

Policy and Economic Views

Sheinbaum has consistently criticized neoliberal economic policies, blaming them for the widespread poverty that affects millions of Mexicans. She advocates for a robust welfare state and supports Mexico’s state-owned oil company, Pemex, while also promising to promote clean energy. Her stance on economic policies aligns with her leftist ideology, focusing on state intervention to provide basic rights and services to all citizens.

During her campaign, Sheinbaum praised López Obrador’s efforts and promised to continue many of his policies, but with a more data-driven and less confrontational approach. Her administration is expected to emphasize scientific and technical solutions to Mexico’s problems, reflecting her academic background.

Personal and Historical Significance

Sheinbaum’s election is historic not only because she is the first woman to lead Mexico but also because she is the first person of Jewish background to hold the office in a predominantly Catholic country. Her personal and family history in science underscores her intellectual rigor and commitment to evidence-based policy-making. This background has shaped her approach to governance, making her a unique figure in Mexican politics.

Challenges Ahead

As Sheinbaum prepares to take office on October 1, she faces immediate challenges, including Mexico’s persistent violence and economic disparities. Despite her promises of continuity, she will need to navigate these issues carefully. Observers note that while she may continue many of López Obrador’s policies, her less confrontational style could lead to a different dynamic in dealing with other branches of government and the media.

Political scientist Ivonne Acuña Murillo from Iberoamerican University suggests that Sheinbaum might choose her battles more selectively than her predecessor, potentially leading Mexico in a new direction while maintaining the core principles of her leftist ideology. “It appears she’s going to go in a different direction,” Acuña Murillo said. “I don’t know how much.”

Claudia Sheinbaum’s presidency represents a new chapter for Mexico, marked by the confluence of scientific rationality and progressive politics. Her unique background and approach to governance will be closely watched by both supporters and critics as she steps into her role. As the first woman and the first person of Jewish background to lead Mexico, Sheinbaum’s presidency is a significant milestone that promises to bring both continuity and change to the nation’s political landscape.
