Ceasefire Elusive as Israeli Attacks Escalate in Northern Gaza

The ongoing Israeli military siege on the northern Gaza Strip has led to the death or disappearance of 5,000 Palestinians over the past 100 days, with 9,500 more injured, according to reports from local medical sources. Despite intensified ceasefire talks brokered by Qatar and U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration, Israeli attacks have escalated, causing catastrophic humanitarian conditions across Gaza.

Devastation Across Northern Gaza

The Gaza Government Media Office described the siege as the “most horrific form of ethnic cleansing and displacement,” as Israeli forces continue to bombard residential areas, schools, shelters, and hospitals.

According to Al Jazeera’s Hind Khoudary, northern Gaza has turned into a “ghost area” with vast destruction. Survivors have either fled or are enduring dire conditions amid continuous bombardment. Hospitals have not been spared. The Kamal Adwan Hospital, a key healthcare center in the north, was torched by Israeli forces in December, leaving its director Hussam Abu Safia missing.

Witnesses report that Israeli forces killed two Palestinians in northern Gaza City on Sunday afternoon, and a subsequent drone attack in the Shati refugee camp resulted in another fatality.

Unrelenting Attacks and Forced Evacuations

In addition to the northern siege, Israeli forces have intensified attacks across the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza. On Sunday, the Israeli military issued forced evacuation orders targeting residents of Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza. Families were warned they risk death if they did not leave the area immediately.

The Gaza Civil Defence reported that at least 70 children have been killed across the enclave over the past five days. Despite ongoing ceasefire negotiations, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has shown little intention of scaling down military operations.

Diplomatic Efforts and Internal Disputes

The United States, led by President Biden, has pushed for a ceasefire and a deal involving the release of hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. Biden, who is set to leave office soon, emphasized the urgent need for humanitarian aid and an end to the fighting during a call with Netanyahu.

While U.S. officials, including National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, have expressed optimism about a potential deal, Israeli leaders insist that military operations will continue. Netanyahu faces internal pressure from far-right ministers like Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben-Gvir, who oppose any ceasefire agreement and threaten to destabilize the ruling coalition.

Humanitarian Crisis: Thousands of Children Orphaned

The humanitarian situation in Gaza has reached catastrophic levels. The Israeli blockade has prevented adequate humanitarian aid from reaching civilians. Thousands of families are living in makeshift shelters or braving the cold outdoors amid famine-like conditions.

According to UNICEF, nearly 1.1 million children in Gaza are in urgent need of mental health support due to the trauma caused by continuous bombardments and displacement. The United Nations estimates that 19,000 children have been orphaned since the start of the war.

Targeting of Journalists and Aid Workers

The media has not been spared either, with 203 journalists reportedly killed by Israeli forces since the conflict began. Several aid convoys have also been looted, worsening the already dire situation for civilians.

The Gaza Health Ministry reported that the total death toll since the war began now stands at 46,565 Palestinians, with 109,660 injured. In just the past 24 hours, 28 more Palestinians have been killed.

`International Condemnation and Calls for Ceasefire

The United Nations and several international bodies have renewed calls for an immediate ceasefire to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza. Despite these pleas, Israeli forces continue their aggressive military campaign, with no clear end in sight.

Meanwhile, large-scale protests against the Israeli government have erupted in Tel Aviv, demanding an end to the war. However, the Israeli administration remains divided, with hawkish ministers determined to continue military operations, regardless of mounting international pressure.
