In cricket, breaking records is a frequent occurrence. However, the record broken by South Africa was particularly short-lived, lasting less than 24 hours. The Proteas set a new record for the lowest score defended in T20 World Cup history.

At Nassau International Cricket Stadium in New York on Monday, South Africa scored 113 runs for 6 wickets. In response, Bangladesh managed 109 runs for 7 wickets, leading to the new record.

The previous day, at the same venue, India secured a dramatic victory against Pakistan by defending a mere 119 runs, stopping Babar Azam’s team at 113 for 7 wickets. This win equaled a 10-year-old record set by Sri Lanka during the 2014 World Cup in Bangladesh, where they defended 119 runs and crushed New Zealand by 59 runs at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram.

International T20 history also includes instances of even lower scores being defended. Zimbabwe once bowled out West Indies for 79 runs after scoring 105, a record that still stands since February 28, 2010, in Trinidad.
