An 11-month-old girl died after choking on “chanachur” (spicy puffed rice snack mix) in Jamalpur’s Sarishabari upazila’s Maijbari area on Wednesday night.
The victim, Sumaiya Khatun, was the daughter of Saidul Rahman from Konabari.
According to family members and locals, Sumaiya had visited her maternal grandfather’s house in Maijbari earlier in the day with her mother, Chanowara Begum.
That night, while Chanowara was busy with household chores, Sumaiya was sitting on the bed. Someone had eaten “chanachur” earlier and left pieces scattered on the bed. Unnoticed by the family, the child put some into her mouth, which became lodged in her throat.
Relatives tried unsuccessfully to remove the obstruction before rushing her to the upazila health complex, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Masudur Rahman, the residential medical officer at the facility, confirmed that the child had died before reaching the hospital, as her airway was blocked by food.
