The interim government is planning to hold local government elections simultaneously with the upcoming national elections to ensure continued local development, according to Chief Adviser Prof. Dr. Muhammad Yunus. He made the remarks on Wednesday (January 8) during a meeting with European Investment Bank (EIB) Vice President Nicola Beer at the state guesthouse Jamuna.

During the meeting, Prof. Yunus outlined the interim government’s detailed plans for conducting both the general election and the local government elections. He emphasized that simultaneous elections would enhance governance at both national and local levels, thereby accelerating development in rural and urban areas.

Nicola Beer expressed the European Union’s support for the interim government and its reform agenda. She noted that the current period presents a favorable opportunity for Bangladesh to implement its electoral and governance reforms.

The interim government has already initiated several reform commissions aimed at improving various sectors, including electoral processes, governance, and public administration. Ensuring fair elections and maintaining stability during this transitional period remain key priorities for the government.

Prof. Yunus highlighted that preparations for both elections are progressing, and efforts are being made to ensure transparency, inclusivity, and the participation of all political stakeholders. He also reiterated the interim government’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for free and fair elections.

As Bangladesh gears up for its next electoral cycle, the dual focus on national and local elections aims to strengthen democracy and promote balanced development across all regions.
