Five coordinators of the quota reform movement are in the custody of the Metropolitan Detective Police (DB). The DB has urged their families not to worry, assuring them that the coordinators’ safety is being taken care of, and they are only being questioned about the movement.

DB Chief Additional Commissioner Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid made these requests during a press conference at his office this afternoon, Sunday.

The DB Chief explained that the safety concern is due to the fact that Jamaat-BNP opportunists infiltrated the movement, aiming to overthrow the democratic government. These groups had planned to set fire to important state establishments. Therefore, for security reasons, the coordinators have been taken into DB custody.

He emphasized that the DB is responsible for apprehending those who have engaged in arson and destruction during the quota movement, particularly the Jamaat-Shibir factions. If anyone feels insecure, it is the DB’s moral responsibility to ensure their safety.

Harun assured the families of the detained coordinators that there is no reason to worry and that the DB is ensuring their safety.

Regarding questioning, Harun-or-Rashid stated that the DB is inquiring about individuals who tried to contact and incite them during the peaceful movement at Dhaka University. They have provided some names and numbers.

When asked about police intimidation of protesters, the Additional Commissioner dismissed such rumors and stated that arrests were made lawfully, including those involved in past incidents such as the attack on the Chief Justice’s residence.

He addressed the concerns from the families and university teachers of the coordinators, stating that no formal requests regarding their safety have been received by the DB. The coordinators are being questioned for security reasons.
