In a decisive development on Thursday, May 23, the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Court, presided over by Judge Mohammad Ash-Shams Joglul Hossain, issued an order to seize 83 property documents of former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Benazir Ahmed. The properties located in Gopalganj came under the scanner following an application by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) amidst allegations of illicit wealth.
The move comes after several media reports highlighted Benazir Ahmed and his wife’s ownership of assets purportedly worth hundreds of crores, sparking nationwide discussions. Following the media outcry, a High Court writ was filed seeking an investigation into the former IGP’s family assets.
Promptly responding to the writ, the ACC announced the formation of a three-member committee to probe into Ahmed’s properties. The case, gaining considerable attention, will soon see hearings in a High Court bench headed by Justice Nazrul Islam Talukder, where Supreme Court lawyer Salahuddin Regan represents the interests of demanding a thorough investigation. The writ has named four individuals including the ACC chairman and secretary as respondents in the case.
