Police in Gazaria upazila of Munshiganj came under attack on Monday evening during a special operation, officials confirmed.
According to Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Anwar Alam Azad of Gazaria police station, the assailants used firearms that had been looted during attacks on nearby police stations in August last year.
“The attackers, wearing helmets and bulletproof vests, suddenly opened fire on police during the operation,” said OC Azad.
He added that the group is allegedly involved in controlling illegal sand trading and local extortion rackets.
In response, police fired back, forcing the assailants to flee the scene. No police personnel were reported injured in the exchange of gunfire.
Authorities say the investigation is ongoing to identify and arrest those involved in the incident.
