Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman has said that negative comments and criticism directed at the Bangladesh Army should not be a cause of frustration.

“Those making such remarks are of our children’s age. When they grow up, they will realise their mistakes and feel ashamed,” he said.

The Army Chief made the remarks on Tuesday morning at the Officers’ Address event held at Dhaka Cantonment, attended both in person and virtually by army officers, according to multiple sources present at the meeting.

Mentioning that the country is heading toward elections, the Army Chief said the Army has also completed all necessary preparations.

“The Army will assist the government in ensuring a free, fair, and neutral election,” he said.

The Army Chief reminded officers that the force is a professional organisation and must demonstrate professionalism while on duty.

He instructed members not to be involved in any retaliatory acts.

Referring to allegations against an officer of having political affiliation, he confirmed that an inquiry is underway and strict action will follow if proven. “No member of the Army is allowed to engage in political activities,” he emphasised.

On another allegation of torture against a woman by an officer, General Waker said the investigation is ongoing, and punishment will be ensured if the charge is proven, but not through “social media trials.”

He stressed that significant state resources are invested in developing each officer, so preventive steps must be taken to ensure they do not engage in crimes.

The Army Chief urged officials not to be misled by misinformation campaigns on social media. “Do not be confused by fake messages spread against the Army. Stay vigilant so that no one can spread misleading information,” he said.

General Waker-Uz-Zaman told officers that the people of Bangladesh look up to them as the future of the nation. He called on them to be inspired by patriotism and maintain the chain of command at all times.
