Tangail town witnessed protest on Wednesday after allegations surfaced that students of Bindubasini Government Boys’ High School were forced to attend a National Citizen Party (NCP) rally.
Angry current and former students of the school took to the streets in the afternoon. Their protest march started from the school premises, wound through key streets, and ended in front of Tangail Press Club, where they chanted slogans against the NCP.
Speakers, including student Saiful Bari and former students Tanzil Ahmed and Sajib Ahmed, alleged that NCP leaders barged into classrooms on Tuesday and compelled students to join their political programme without permission from teachers.
They demanded punishment for those involved and called for a public apology.
School headmaster Tofazzal Hossain denied direct involvement, saying, “Classes for grades six to eight had ended normally, but noise from the nearby NCP rally forced us to dismiss grades nine and ten early. We don’t know who attended the rally.”
Tangail NCP coordinator Masudur Rahman apologised, assuring students this would not happen again.
NCP’s northern region organiser Azad Khan Bhashani also expressed regret in a Facebook post, claiming it was an “isolated incident” and not a party directive.
NCP’s “July March” on Tuesday saw participation from central leaders, including convener Nahid Islam, before culminating in a rally at Nirala crossing.
