After 15 months of relentless conflict, the Israeli cabinet has approved a ceasefire agreement with Hamas, set to begin on Sunday. This landmark deal, mediated by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, aims to exchange captives held in Gaza for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails and provides a framework for addressing the humanitarian crisis in the war-ravaged Gaza Strip.

Key Details of the Ceasefire:

  1. Ceasefire Implementation:
    • The ceasefire will begin with a six-week phase.
    • Initially, 33 Israeli captives will be exchanged for 1,700 Palestinian prisoners.
    • Captive exchanges will occur in stages, monitored by the Red Cross and international observers.
  2. Humanitarian Relief:
    • A significant influx of humanitarian aid is expected in Gaza.
    • Egypt’s Rafah border crossing will serve as a critical gateway for aid, with discussions ongoing about its management.
  3. Israeli Military Withdrawal:
    • Israeli forces will begin pulling back from specific areas in Gaza.
    • Palestinians displaced by the conflict can return to areas deemed safe, though some zones near the border will remain restricted.
  4. Palestinian Authority’s Role:
    • The Palestinian Authority (PA) announced readiness to assume administrative control in Gaza, including the Rafah crossing.
    • Discussions are underway about long-term governance and reconstruction efforts.

Challenges and Reactions:

  • Israeli Cabinet Division:
    • The deal was passed with 24 votes in favor and eight against, showcasing internal dissent within Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition.
    • Right-wing hardliners oppose the agreement, citing concerns over national security and Hamas’s political leverage.
  • Uncertainty Among Palestinians:
    • In Gaza, residents express mixed emotions—relief at the prospect of peace and sorrow for the extensive loss of life and destruction.
    • Over 46,788 Palestinians have been killed, and more than 110,000 injured during the conflict.
  • International Reactions:
    • The United States has emphasized its role in facilitating the deal, with President Joe Biden and National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan highlighting the critical nature of this agreement.
    • Qatar and Egypt continue to play pivotal roles in negotiations and logistics for aid delivery.

While the ceasefire represents a significant step towards halting the violence, long-term questions about governance, rebuilding Gaza, and ensuring sustainable peace remain unanswered. The Palestinian Authority’s readiness to take control of Gaza could shift the political landscape, but the influence of Hamas and the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict will continue to be key factors in the region’s stability.
